There are nearly 40 million first-generation immigrants living in our country today, including about 10 million who are undocumented. About 60% of all illegal immigrants are from Mexico and about 20% are from Central America. Family reunification is the reason for most legal immigration to the US. The number of immigrants who became legal permanent residents in 2009 as a result of family reunification (66%) exceeded those who became legal residents on the basis of employment skills (13%) or for humanitarian reasons (17%).

In 2013, a bipartisan Senate passed a comprehensive approach to modernizing our immigration system that provided a tough but fair 13-year pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. It also created a new merit-based visa category to clear the backlog of more than 4 million people who have been waiting for years or decades to get a green card. This bill also provided for the largest investment in border security to date. By a vote of 68 to 32, the Senate passed S.744 - Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. But House Speaker John Boehner refused to consider it — or any other form of immigration reform. Had this bill become law, and it likely would’ve passed Congress, it would’ve brought millions of people off the economic sidelines and put them on a pathway to citizenship. It also would have added $1.2 trillion to the economy, increase all Americans’ overall income by $625 billion and create an annual average of 145,000 jobs over a decade.

Pending Legislation: H.R. - 3599 Dignity for Immigrants while Guarding our Nation to Ignite and Deliver the American Dream Act of 2023 or as the DIGNIDAD (Dignity) Act of 2023
Sponsor: Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (FL)

House Minority Leader: Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY) (Requesting Discharge Petition)

  • I oppose reforming current immigration reform policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).
  • I support addressing immigration-related issues, such as increasing hiring for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel and providing removal deferral for eligible non-U.S. nationals (aliens under federal law) by: 1.) Requiring the hiring of additional CBP personnel and authorizes recruitment, relocation, and retention bonuses for CBP personnel. 2.) Providing funding for border infrastructure and equipment. 3.) Making it a crime to transmit the location of law enforcement with the intent to violate immigration laws or certain other federal laws. 4.) Requiring employers to verify the immigration status of individuals using an electronic employment eligibility confirmation system modeled after the E-Verify system. 5.) Requiring unaccompanied alien children to be processed and reunited with U.S.-based sponsors in accordance with the Flores settlement, which established policies pertaining to the treatment of minors without lawful immigration status. 6.) Requiring the Department of State to implement a strategy to address the key factors contributing to individuals from Central America traveling to the United States. 7.) Providing a path to permanent resident status to eligible individuals without lawful immigration status who entered the United States as minors (commonly referred to as Dreamers). 8.) Establishing the Dignity Program, which defers the removal of eligible individuals without lawful immigration status who meet various requirements, including paying into a fund to provide training to U.S. workers. 9.) Establishing the Redemption Program, which provides a path to permanent resident status to individuals who complete the Dignity Program and meet various requirements, including making additional payments into the U.S. worker fund. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
